Baguio City to launch Panagbenga 2023 this Dec. 12

Baguio City, Philippines – The launching of Baguio City’s major crowd drawing event - Panagbenga will be made earlier this time.

“Panagbenga” was coined by Isikias ‘Ike’ T. Picpican in 1996 from the Kankana-ey term meaning, “a season of blooming” or “a time for flowering.” Recently, City Council Ordinance No. 484, series of 2022 was approved, commending Picpican for introducing the term.

“The Festival provided an opportunity for flower and ornamental plant growers to promote their industry, for the pony handlers to display their equestrian skills, and for all sectors of the community to contribute their artistic talents and cultural creativity for the entire community, visitors and tourists to experience, reflect and enjoy,” reads the measure.

Panagbenga 2023

For Panagbenga 2023, the local government along with Baguio Flower Festival Foundation, Inc. (BFFFI) will formally launch the scheduled activities during the regular flag-raising ceremony next Monday, Dec. 12, the Public Information Office reported earlier today.

However, the opening of the 2023 festival will still be on February 1, 2023, stressed the Supervising City Tourism Operations Officer Engr. Aloysius C. Mapalo.

Activities are being finalized as of yet but traditional events such as the elimination round of the participating schools will surely be done.

Grand street dancing parade and grand float parades will be held on the last weekend of February, to be followed by the week-long Session Road in Bloom and the formal closing ceremony.

The annual conduct of the Panagbenga, as stated by the same office, will now be carried through the private initiative of the flower festival foundation as the local government already cut off the subsidy it had been granting through the years.
