Baguio CLGU issues apology over delayed road repair project

Baguio City, Philippines – Hours after a local media posted a public sentiment over what seemed to be an “abandoned street,” the city government of Baguio through its Engineering Office issued an apology statement.

“The rehabilitation of Carantes Street into a supposed “shared street” as envisioned by City Hall continues to baffle the general public, as this once busy street appeared to have been abandoned by the contractor and nothing has been done to complete the project and allow full utilization of the street,” captioned Baguio Midland Courier on its June 16 post.

In the evening of the same day, the City Public Information Office in a press release said “The local government apologized for any inconvenience that the delayed completion of the road repair project along Perfecto - Carantes Streets has caused to the public over the past several months.”

Attached to the post is a public advisory from the engineering office, explaining the reason behind the delay of the project which was stopped on Dec. 13 last year.

The office said the “contractor's failure to deliver the expected output and accomplish the project as outlined in the initial agreement” resulted in contract termination.a

“This unfortunate circumstance prompted the LGU to take immediate action in order to ensure that the project is completed to the highest standards,” added the office.

After the contract termination, the project underwent a comprehensive redesign to assess the previous work done and identify the most effective way to proceed, explained the CEO.

A bidding phase will then be held to determine the most competent and reliable contractor for the task.

“We understand that the delays and uncertainties surrounding the project may have caused frustrations and raised questions among the concerned masses and we apologize for any inconvenience and assure you that we are doing everything within our power to expedite the process and minimize further delays,” concluded the engineering office.
