Baguio consumers cry foul over ‘sayote/kamote tops scam’

Baguio City, Philippines – Vegetable consumers in Baguio City have cried foul over what they coined as “sayote/kamote tops scam.”

“Makatarungan bang bumili ng ganito? Nagbabayad ka naman ng tama!” captioned a consumer as she took to social media to voice out her frustration.

Jerrimea Aguinaldo recounted that she bought a bundle of ‘sayote tops’ for a regular prize at Hangar Market area of Baguio City Public Market. When she was about to prepare the vegetable for cooking, it was then when she found out that what was inside the bundle were mere leaves and were only covered with ‘sayote tops.’

She bought another bundle from a different vendor at the public market. When she got home, she cut the bundled ‘sayote tops’ in half and she discovered, to her dismay, that it was again full of leaves.

To caution other consumers, she decided to take a video and post it on Facebook. Some of those who viewed it commented they experienced the same incident in purchasing ‘sayote tops’ and ‘kamote tops.’

According to Aguinaldo, the retailers are aware of such circumstances but they cannot do anything as these bundles were given to them by farmers and they only sell the vegetables.

The buyer asked those behind the modus operandi to refrain from doing it as the consumers are trying their best and are working hard to provide food at their table.
