Baguio cops have good mental health - BCPO assures despite cop suicide

Updated: Aug 29, 2023

Baguio City, Philippines – Being a law enforcement officer can be rewarding but can be mentally taxing. Disturbing incidents that come with the job can eventually take a toll.

In mid-August this year, a police officer in Baguio City, whose identity was withheld, was found unconscious in their bathroom in Barangay Honeymoon-Holy Ghost.

The victim’s brother-in-law, who is living in the same place, accordingly heard two consecutive gunshots emanating from their bathroom. He rushed to check what happened but the bathroom door was then locked. When he kicked it down, he saw the victim seated on the floor with blood oozing from his head.

A short firearm was also on the floor, covered by the victim’s foot.

He was immediately brought to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Initial probe states the cop died due to severe traumatic brain injury caused allegedly by self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Baguio City Police Office later ruled out foul play but investigation on the incident is underway.

In relation to this, BCPO’s Information Officer, PCapt. Angeline Dongpaen affirmed police personnel in the city have good mental health as City Director, PCol. Francis Bulwayan Jr. has been prioritizing mental wellness.

Part of Bulwayan’s 10-point agenda, she said, are events aimed at uplifting the morale and welfare of the personnel such as seminars, basketball friendship games, ‘Oplan Balik Alindog’ program, among others.

Spiritual programs per station with the aid of “life coaches” are likewise regularly held to help policemen in their moral and spiritual recovery.
