Baguio farmers get P.7M worth of agricultural interventions from DA-Cordillera

Baguio City, Philippines - To help enhance food sufficiency and support urban farming in the city, the Department of Agriculture - Cordillera handed P735,000 worth of agricultural interventions to farmers in Baguio City.

This initiative likewise aims to address agricultural development in the region, DA- Cordillera mentioned in their press release.

During the farmer’s consultation on Oct. 4, 2023 at the Baguio City Hall, the agency turned over 31 UV plastic sheets, 3 walking-type tractors, 4 HDPE pipes, various farm tools, and seeds to the city government.

Said agricultural units were received by 31 farmers affected by Typhoon Egay, 4 Farmers' Cooperatives and Associations, and 1 Non-Governmental Organization on same day.

Likewise, the local government, in partnership with the city’s Bureau of Plant Industry, added 3 walking-type tractors and 7 UV plastic sheets as additional support to them.

During said event, Mayor Benjamin Magalong assured the city's steadfast dedication to farmers’ welfare while emphasizing that the city was actively collaborating with the DA to improve marketing opportunities for their crops.

He then expressed the local government’s goal to elevate the city’s crop production, as DA- Cordillera cited that Baguio's agricultural industry currently accounts for only 3-4% of its economy.

DA-Cordillera Regional Executive Director Atty. Jennilyn M. Dawayan, meantime, assured the agency's wholehearted support for the city’s proposed projects.

She then encouraged the beneficiaries to make good use of the provided interventions and multiply their benefits to ensure long-term sustainability.
