Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center successfully performs its first kidney transplant

Updated: Aug 24

Baguio City, Philippines – A historic feat was made by doctors of the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) earlier this week after successfully performing their first kidney transplant operation.

In a Facebook post on August 20, the Department of Health Cordillera expressed their felicitations to the medical facility for ‘setting a new milestone in healthcare for Northern Luzon.’

Details of the first life-saving operation were not disclosed as of yet. To recall, BGHMC Kidney Transplant facility had its accreditation in April 2022 but there was no report of a transplant operation until lately.

The DOH-run tertiary hospital has been servicing renal disease patients across the Cordillera region over the years for their hemodialysis treatment. However, it was only this year that they performed a kidney transplant procedure.

For patients to be able to undergo said procedure, they need at least P1.2 million. Accordingly, about half of the amount will be shouldered by PhilHealth under its Z-package.

After the procedure, P200,000 is again needed for continued medication of the patient. This is a requirement after one undergoes said operation.

In the Cordillera, the first operation of its kind transpired in 2020, particularly at the Cordillera Hospital of the Divine Grace (CHDG).

This was performed by a team of doctors from Metro Manila and from the Cordillera Region.
