Baguio is 5th cleanest city in Southeast Asia for mid-year 2024

Baguio City, Philippines - The City of Pines was recently honored with international recognition as one of the top ten cleanest cities in Southeast Asia for the mid-year period of 2024.

Baguio is known for its cool climate, rich culture, and attractive views, which attract thousands of tourists every year. As one of the most visited places in the Philippines, the city maintains its cleanliness and ecological balance by solving numerous environmental problems primarily brought about by high population and urbanization.

One of the problems in the city is the improper disposal of waste. Thus, the local officials, headed by Mayor Benjamin Magalong, have been actively conducting proper waste management campaigns to educate the residents as well as tourists on how they help preserve the beauty of the summer capital.

Another significant problem facing the city is air pollution which come from use of various types of vehicles. The LGU has responded to this by improving public transport, thus reducing the number of private vehicles being used on the road. Additionally, they are implementing traffic management measures like congestion pricing, among others.

Furthermore, the LGU encourages its residents to walk or use a bicycle when they go out or go to work instead of using vehicles.

The LGU, in collaboration with its partner agencies and other local organizations, has been more active in tree planting activities to help keep alive the beauty of the city’s forest and provide cleaner and safer air to breathe.

The efforts of the LGU and the participation of its people have paid off. The city was named the 5th cleanest city in Southeast Asia for mid-year 2024, with a 72.9 score rating at the Numbeo Pollution Index.

Apart from Baguio, two other cities in the country, Davao and Cebu, made it on the top 10 list, ranking 2nd and 10th, respectively.

Numbeo is an index that ranks cities in the Southeast Asian region based on several pollution factors. These include air, waste, water, and noise pollution. The ranking is based on data and surveys compiled by its users, which reflect their perception and experience of these environmental issues.
