Baguio logs 51% drop in crimes from Jan. - August 2023


Baguio City, Philippines – The city of Baguio has documented a 51% decline in crimes as of August 2023 compared to 2019, according to police.


This was reported by the Baguio City Police Office during the 2nd Regional Task Group Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections meeting held on August 15.

Police Colonel Francisco Bulwayan Jr. reported a total of 428 crime incidents were recorded in the city from January 1 - August 14 this year.


Said figure is lower by 51% from the 842 cases of same period in 2019.


Of the 428 cases, 151 were identified as index crimes or crimes which are committed against a person and property. These include theft, physical injury, rape, robbery, homicide, carnapping motor vehicles, carnapping motorcycles, and murder.


Non - index crimes, meantime, also decreased to 277 from 528 cases, of which, the "most prevalent” is the Violence against Women and their Children. Incidents of such cases have dropped to 90.

Likewise, BCPO’s Anti-illegal Drug Operations recorded 72 accomplishments, as compared to 66 in 2019.


Figures are likely to change until the end of the year.


Meanwhile, as the local elections draw near, authorities are now on guard for criminal activities in the city, particularly illegal drugs and firearms, as well as supporting the gun ban and checkpoints by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).
