Baguio Midland Courier releases last issue, folds after 77 years of publication

Baguio City, Philippines – Seventy-seven years of unparalleled and credible publication, Baguio Midland Courier, the longest-running English community newspaper in Northern Luzon, has released its final issue on Sunday, July 21, 2024.

BMC which has the highest circulation among regional papers in the Cordillera region first released its issue on April 28, 1947, two years after the second world war. To deliver ‘Fair, Fearless, Friendly, and Free’ information across the country and borders, the publication launched its website in 2007.

Nearly eight decades of covering and surviving historic moments like the challenges of post war, the devastating 1990 Luzon earthquake, and the Covid-19 pandemic, Baguio Midland Courier folded with the banner ‘BMC wraps up 77 years of journalism excellence’.

BMC announced on June 30 that it will cease publication as the paper “is not spared from the worldwide trend facing unprecedented challenges, leading to closure of venerable publications.”

It could be recalled that the only daily newspaper in Baguio City, Sun Star Baguio, shut down in May 2021 after 26 years of operation due to the economic challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

As BMC will no longer be replenishing the newsstands in Baguio City with new issue every Sunday, the publication thanked their supporters for being with them for the past decades.

The management and staff of the Midland Courier under the Hamada Printers & Publishers’ Corp. wish to thank all our esteemed readers, advertisers, and supporters for being with us for the past 77 years,” they wrote on their Facebook page.
