Baguio passes resolution reminding businesses to give 20% discount to national athletes, coaches

Baguio, Philippines – After observing that Baguio-based national athletes and coaches are not yet accorded the 20% discount benefit, Baguio City councilors passed another resolution reminding the business sectors to observe said existing law mandating said discount.

City Councilors Levy Lloyd Orcales and Benny Bomogao, who authored the resolution, said that majority of the privately owned establishments in Baguio City are not yet aware of Republic Act 10699 or the Sports Benefits and Incentives Act of 2001.

Through RA 10699, national athletes and coaches are entitled to receive a 20% discount from all commercial establishments, transportation services, hotels and lodging places, restaurants, and the purchase of medicine and sports equipment in the country.

Also, the national athletes and coaches enjoy a minimum of 20% discount on admission fees in theaters, cinema houses, concert halls circuses, carnivals, and other similar places of culture, leisure, and amusement.

These grants, Orcales and Bomogao asserted, are yet to be enjoyed by many Baguio-based national athletes and coaches, which is why the city council passed the resolution even after they previously passed a similar one.

The city councilors see the need to reiterate Republic Act 10699 to the business sectors to provide the necessary support to the national athletes and coaches in the city, mentioning that some of them bagged medals in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Japan.

Non-compliant to the law shall be penalized with P100,000 or imprisonment of not less than 6 months but not more than 2 years, or both. Also, they can be fined P200,000 or imprisonment of not less than 2 years but not more than 6 years, or both for any subsequent violation, as mentioned in Section 11 of RA No. 10699.
