Baguio City, Philippines – Baguio City reported that dengue cases have dropped significantly from Jan. 01 to Sept. 06 this year.

Sanitation division chief of City Health Services Office Charles Carame during last week’s media forum said 649 dengue cases were so far recorded, which is equivalent to a 72.12-percent decline from last year's 2,328 cases.

Of the total cases this 2023, 333 were males and 316 were females. Most of which are from Irisan, Camp 7, Bakakeng Central, San Vicente and Asin Road.

One death was recorded due to dengue fever complications.

Dengue is a viral infection that spreads from mosquitoes to people through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito. Most people who get dengue won’t have symptoms. But for those that do, the most common symptoms are high fever, headache, body aches, nausea and rash. Severe cases can be fatal, according to World Health Organization.

“Compared to the same period last year, dengue cases in the city this year have decreased, but unfortunately, meron pa rin brought about by the rain, where cases usually increase during the rainy season,” stated Carame.

The sanitation division chief reminded residents to protect themselves against dengue by sanitation and hygiene, ‘not only to ourselves but also to our environment.’

To recall, City Mayor Benjamin Magalong asked the public not to rely on the government to do the cleaning for them.
