Baguio saves P39.3M from streetlight expenses thru LED light

Baguio City, Philippines – Power bills incurred by streetlights are among the expenses being paid by the local government units monthly and if not conserved, it could require a higher amount than usual. Additional charges as such may be appropriated for other causes instead.

For the city government of Baguio, it reported that it was able to cut over P39.3 million or 67.37 percent of electricity costs from streetlights since the completion of its light-emitting diode (LED) lights project on March 25, 2022.

Compared to conventional streetlights, LED lights are much more energy-efficient and less prone to failures with low power usage.

Each of the installed LED streetlights was assigned an identification code to easily locate which needed repair in case such is needed, said the City Engineer, Edgar Victorio Olpindo through City Public Information Office.

With conventional streetlights, the city, he said, was consuming 5,982,912 kilowatt hours per year equivalent to P58,339,973.16 annual bill.

With LED lights, the power bill dropped to P19,037,421.84 a year.

As to its impact on the environment, LED lights reduce carbon dioxide emissions to 204,497.14 kilograms compared to the conventional bulb.

“LED use has less power/watts per unit of light generated in lumens thereby, LED helps reduce greenhouse gas emission from power plants and lower electric bills,” said the city engineer.
