Baguio tobacco users decreased, vape users went up

Updated: Mar 5, 2023

Baguio City, Philippines – While tobacco patronage was observed to have declined in Baguio City, vape users reportedly hiked last year.

This is according to the 2022 Baguio Adult Tobacco Survey findings, which covered 880 participants from Baguio City. The respondents who were chosen through systematic household sampling are ages 15 and above.

According to Baguio City Public Information Office, the survey found that the use of tobacco decreased from 35.4% in 2014 to 13.1% last year. Smoking also declined from 31% to 8.9%.

While there is a decrease in tobacco use, the study discovered that there is an increase in e-cigarette use like vape. Vape is an electronic device that heats a liquid turning it into an aerosol or vapor which the user inhales.

The study revealed that the prevalence of vaping went up from 1.5% in 2019 to 5.1% in 2022. Most of those who use vape belong to the 15-24 age groups.

As of 2021, there are 82 million vape users monitored in the world which is 17% higher when compared to the users in 2020. According to the National Nutrition Council, 2.7 million, or 3% of the figure are Filipinos.

The Department of Health has since conveyed that vape products are harmful and not risk-free to people. They asserted it should be regulated as a health product due to its toxic substances and effects.
