Balbalan, Kalinga prepares for Bodong Festival’s “Awong Chi Gangsa, Agtun Chi Banga”

Balbalan, Kalinga – The municipality of Balbalan headed by Mayor Almar Malannag is now preparing for their participation in the “Awong Chi Gangsa, Agtun Chi Banga” during the Bodong festival to be held on February 15, 2023.


‘Awong Chi Gangsa, Agtun Chi Banga’ is one of the main highlights of the 28th Kalinga Founding Anniversary and the 4th Bodong Festival which will be celebrated next month.

Said event was coordinated with the local government of Balbalan, earlier getting instruction to select the best gong players and dancers in the municipality.


Pearl Tumbali, Municipal Coordinator and Organizer of the activity, disclosed they will immediately practice their dance steps once the necessary materials such as gongs and pots are already available.


“Diay practice mi will start next Monday, madama mi ikumkumpleto ti banga and diyay kurang mi ti gangsa,” Tumbali relayed.


The local government unit already purchased clay jars and other materials needed by the dancers.

The organizer added they will be sending the best dancers and gong players from the 14 barangays of the municipality.


Performance of said event will be done from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. on the said date at the Kalinga Sports Complex.


‘Awong Chi Gangsa, Agtun Chi Banga’


The Awong Chi Gangsa, Agtun Chi Banga translates to a Call of a Thousand Gongs; The Dance of a Thousand Pots.


In this activity, thousands of Kalinga men will play gongs with a rhythmic beat and Kalinga women will dance with pots on their heads.


Playing gongs represents peace, unity, and progress in the province and the pots symbolize the Kalinga cultural hospitality.
