Balbalan’s Binungol Fest to be celebrated in March next year

Balbalan, Kalinga – After the success of the first Binungol Festival in Balbalan, the Municipal Local Government Unit plans to mark next year’s celebration alongside the town fiesta in March.

The Municipal LGU headed by Mayor Almar Malannag launched the festival on Oct. 25, during the municipal-wide celebration of the Indigenous People’s month at the Municipal Hall Compound in Balbalan Proper.

The celebration was highlighted by the display of indigenous delicacies and practices by the different subtribes in Balbalan. Among the activities include binungol cooking and eating, ‘man-aba’ competition, ‘manbayo’, and ‘mangibed/mangulili’ contest.

In an interview, Mayor Malannag explained that the first Binungol fest was celebrated on IP month since the native Kalinga dish is part of the heritage of Balbalan, being the town where Binungol or Binungor originated from.

“Daytoy nga talaga nga binungor ket nagapu ditoy Balbalan iti tribu iti Salegseg. Ken daytoy binungor, nagapu iti word nga finungol,” he said.

The observation of Binungol Festival in March next year will be discussed further by Mayor Malannag and Sangguniang Bayan officials led by Vice Mayor Rowina Alison Damian.
