Balbalan wins big at regional barangay health worker, nutrition awarding


Balbalan, Kalinga – The dedication and hard work of the frontline health workers and nutrition scholars in Balbalan, Kalinga were recognized during the awarding ceremony spearheaded by the regional health department.


Among the 12 finalists of the Barangay Health Worker (BHW) Performance-Based Incentives Award, the Department of Health – Cordillera hailed Gemily Dakiwag of said town as second Most Outstanding BHW in the region, next to Marites S. Taguibos of Benguet.

Dakiwag was joined by Rural Health Midwife, Delia Bayog; DOH Nurse, Argin Claire Bog-acon; and former Punong Barangay, Jeff-Fred Tabca𝗈 of Poblacion, during the awarding on November 15 in Baguio City.


The awardee gained commendation from the local officials led by Tabcao who was among those who can attest to her diligence in serving the community.


Mayor Almar Malannag, in a statement, expressed pride in Dakiwag’s achievement which is proof of her “unwavering commitment to uplift community health in Barangay Poblacion.”


As regarded by the Head of DOH-CAR Local Health System Section, Bridgit Hydee A. Salao, the BHWs are the ‘unsung heroes of the community who often work under demanding conditions, with limited resources, and yet continue to provide vital health services with a smile on their faces.’


Regional Nutrition Awarding


Meanwhile, Municipal Health Officer Dr. Ester Roselle D. Calma was conferred the 2022 Green Banner Seal of Compliance by the National Nutrition Council for Balbalan’s exemplary performance in the implementation of nutrition programs which greatly contributed to improving the nutrition situation in town.

Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS), Mylene Calagui of Barangay Balantoy was further lauded as among the finalists in the search for 2022 Regional Outstanding BNS.


Both received their accolade during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held on Tuesday, November 21, also in Baguio City.


The Municipal Nutrition Office took to social media to extend gratitude to the Chairperson of the local nutrition council, Mayor Malannag; the members of the Municipal Nutrition Committee; nutrition workers, and all who supported their fight towards ending malnutrition and hunger.
