Updated: Oct 11, 2023

Balbalan, Kalinga – Barangay Balbalasang in Balbalan, Kalinga is another step closer to winning the “Best Cordillera Tourism Village” title as it advances to Top 6.

Last year, Balbalasang Proper “Pasual” pocketed P100,000 in winnings for settling as a runner-up in said search launched by the Department of Tourism – Cordillera.

The village returns to join the competition anew with more exciting tourism activities such as rappelling and bird watching, among others. The tourism office in town led by Regine Faye D. Munda-Cruz further tapped the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to designate personnel as lifeguard, particularly at Tuy-ob Saltan River swimming area.

“Balbalasang is known for its rich natural resources from the mountains to the rivers like the Saltan River which was awarded the cleanest inland body of water in the 1990s. Balbalasang is known because it was named as the Balbalasang National Park but now it is known as Banao Protected Landscape,” said the Municipal Tourism Officer in a video clip.

Meanwhile, the DOT – Cordillera described the village as part of a declared protected landscape by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and a national park since 1972, with the most intact pine forests and richly endemic flora and fauna in the region, making it an ecotourism marvel while also being rich in tradition and culture.

When visiting the place, tourists will get to experience the history through the heritage buildings. The village likewise offers Sea of Clouds at Sitio Bolak, picnic area, camping area, and trekking. The incredible local cuisine is also something that tourists cannot resist.

The Top 6 tourism villages will be judged based on sustainable management (25%), cultural sustainability (25%), socio-economic and rural economic development sustainability (25%), and environmental sustainability (25%).

The entry garnering the highest score will bring home the grand prize amounting to P1,000,000. Second and third placers will win P500,000 and P200,000 cash prize, respectively. The three other entries will be awarded P100,000 prize.
