Tabuk City, Kalinga – Barangay Bantay in Tabuk City, known as the fruit basket of the city, celebrated its “Prutas Festival” through a ceremonial thanksgiving held Saturday, October 22, at the open gymnasium of the barangay.

The fruit festival is an annual festivity in the village that gives the farmers the opportunity to display their bountiful harvest.

Bantay is known to the locals as a major producer of rambutan, dragon fruits, durian, lanzones, and other fruits. The barangay established the “pick and buy” activity where buyers are allowed by the owners of plantations to do the picking.

The village attracts visitors during the harvest season from other provinces, including those in Region 2.

In September 2021, Bantay Council sought before the City Council the declaration of the barangay as the “Fruit Basket Capital” of the city ‘to make the title official with a legal basis.’

The Sangguniang Panlungsod then expressed support for the proposed measure, agreeing that “it is high time for Bantay to be officially recognized given that is already known for the said title for the past years.’

The creation of an ordinance institutionalizing the proposal was then assigned to the Committee on Agriculture.
