Barangay Bagumbayan is 2023 Best Tourism Village in Cordillera, gets P1M tourism grant

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Tagged as ‘coffee village’ by the Department of Tourism—Cordillera, Bagumbayan is named this year as the Best Tourism Village in the region, bringing home the top prize amounting to P1 million.

The village, known for producing a variety of locally produced coffee products, bested 11 other tourism and cultural villages in the region for this year’s competition.

It topped the determinants of choosing the winner, which include sustainable management, socio-economic sustainability, cultural sustainability, environmental sustainability, and rural economic development.

This comes after the rigorous site validations and deliberations of the tourism department of the region.

Coming in second place is the Bila Tourism Village of Bauko, Mountain Province, which was granted P500,000. In third place is the Balbalasang Eco-Village of Balbalan, Kalinga, which received a P200,000 tourism grant.

Meanwhile, runners-up were the Nagacadan Open Air Museum in Kiangan, Ifugao; the Chaya Heritage Village in Mayoyao, Ifugao; and the Tawang Tourism Village in Balbalan, Kalinga. They all received P100,000 each.

As previously mentioned by DOT-CAR Regional Director Jovita Ganongan, the grants will be utilized by the winning entries to enhance the quality of tourism experiences in their villages through the improvement of trails and access, upgrading of existing public toilets and restrooms, beautification, installing signage, livelihood training, and other capacity-building programs, among others.

Now in its second year, the Search for the Best Tourism Village has been launched in December 2022 by the agency, as they aim to put the tourism villages in the limelight for their exemplary performance in promoting sustainable, responsible, equitable, and participatory rural tourism development.

Through this, it is expected that it would boost the growth of the region’s tourism industry and offer more attractions to both domestic and foreign tourists.
