Cagayan, Philippines – A barangay captain in Buguey town, Cagayan was found dead in his fish pond over the weekend.

At around 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 11, Punong Barangay Artemio Taal, 55, of Cabaritan village in Buguey headed to their fish pond in Barangay San Isidro to feed the fishes. He normally returns home before dark but that day, he didn’t.

His wife grew worried and so their relatives went to look for him. When they arrived at the pond, they saw Taal lying on his side with blood on his eyes and ears. He was then unconscious.

Responding personnel of Buguey police rushed the village chief to the Rural Health Unit but the Municipal Health Officer declared him dead on arrival.

Deputy Chief of Police of Buguey, PCPT Glenda Paraggua relayed the MHO presumed that the Punong Barangay died of cardiac arrest.

The police, meanwhile, said Taal might have been hit by a lightning that resulted in his death.

“Medyo malakas po yung ulan, kidlat at kulog doon po sa pinangyarihan kaya ang atin pong mga kasamahan – kapulisan at taga-MHO, pinuntahan po yung mismong pinangyarihan,” stated Paraggua in her interview with the local media.

There, they saw a burnt coconut tree just few meters away from where the body of the village chief was found.

In a progress report, the police revealed the cause of death is “cardiorespirarory arrest secondary to lightning strike” based on the post mortem examination.
