Benguet athlete first Cordilleran to join Philippine Azkals


Benguet, Philippines – A young athlete from Tublay and Kapangan, Benguet is the first Cordilleran to be part of the national football team known as The Azkals.


Audie Bantas Menzi started playing football when he was yet in grade school. In his college days, he joined the football team of Far Eastern University. He was also a team member of the KAYA Futbol Club in Ilo-ilo until he was called into the national team during their friendly game in June 2022.

The 28-year-old athlete who stands 1.72-meter tall underwent series of screening procedure before he officially made it to the Philippine Azkals.


Menzi is now among the players representing the country in international football.


His mom who passed away last year and his family inspired him to persevere in the team sport.


In December 2022, Azkals represented the country in AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup at Rizal Memorial Stadium where they beat Brunei.

He encouraged those in the region who are aspiring to be part of the same team to be inspired and do the best they can saying, “kung nakaya ko, kaya niyo rin.”


Tublay local government took to social media their appreciation of the young athlete’s achievement.
