"Betty" leaves 1 farmer dead, 1 injured in Cordillera

Tuba, Benguet – Typhoon "Betty" left at least one farmer dead and another individual injured.

Betty did not make land fall but it brought heavy rain and strong winds to Northern Luzon before it moved out of the Philippine area last week.

In Tuba, Benguet, 64-year-old Gregorio “Tony” Menzi, single, was believed to have drowned in a river along Sitio Daclan, Taloy Norte, Tuba, Benguet. He used to reside in the same area.

He was last seen taking shelter in a box culvert on May 31. The following day, another farmer found him dead, reported Tuba Municipal Police Station.

The family did not ask for autopsy on his body as they believe no foul play was involved with his death.

Menzi was the only death reported in the wake of Typhoon “Betty.”

Earlier, a 33-year-old male was injured after a tree fell on him in Barangay Batan in Kabayan, Benguet.

In its latest report, the Department of Social Welfare and Development - Cordillera stated over 32,000 individuals in five provinces in the region were affected by the typhoon. It further damaged 60 houses, of which two were totally wrecked.

Financial assistance, including family food packs among others, are being distributed to those affected.
