La Trinidad, Benguet— Cow’s milk and dairy production in Benguet is expected to further increase as the province now owns a dairy production facility, the first ever in the Cordillera region.

Located at Kabayan Breeding Station in Adaoay, Kabayan, Benguet, said facility was built through the combined efforts of the provincial government, the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera, and the National Dairy Authority.

The facility was inaugurated on Tuesday, March 11, led by Governor Melchor Diclas and officials of the DA-CAR and NDA.

In its press release, DA-CAR said the initiative, which funded P5 million, is part of the national strategy to increase the Philippines’ milk sufficiency rate, which is at 1.65% as of 2024. Said agencies aim to raise the rate to 2.5% by the end of this year.

Calabarzon, Western Visayas, and Northern Mindanao are the leading producers of milk in the country.

During the inauguration ceremony, 10 heads of dairy cattle were handed over to the PLGU by the DA-CAR and NDA.

DA-CAR Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulations Arlene Sagayo encouraged workers and veterinarians of the said facility to take care of the cattle while commending their efforts in doing their duties at the farm.

"While enjoying this opportunity, don’t forget the core principles of good animal husbandry," she added.

Meanwhile, Governor Diclas extended his heartfelt gratitude to the agencies for their unwavering support for such projects in the province. He also explained that consistent support for the facility will guarantee its sustainability and potential as a secure source of livelihood for the community.
