BFAR-Kalinga convenes meeting with LGUs for 2025 aquaculture projects

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) – Kalinga recently held a meeting in February this year together with the Local Government Office Units (LGUs) and other partner offices on the projects to be implemented this year.

Technological demonstration (techno-demo), aquaculture and regulatory trainings, and technical assistance for fisherfolks are among the projects discussed during the meeting.

The purpose of the techno-demo project, according to Provincial Agriculturist 1 Cliford L. Fernandez, is to showcase the new methods of fish culture with the use of new technology which fisherfolk communities may use.

“One goal of techno-demo is to educate fisherfolks and the public on how to culture fish the right way,” Fernandez said in addressing the stereotype of culturing fish the old way.

Following the meeting, the LGUs are given three weeks to choose recipients who will be trained. Said recipients should be registered fisherfolk and with a good standing record.

The recipients will undergo training on social and basic preparations, feeding, and how to quarantine fish, among others. Thereafter, they will be reassessed to qualify them to be part of the project.

On the technical assistance project, Fernandez emphasized that the assistance encompasses initial support for fisherfolks including free provisions of fingerlings, feeds, and fishing gear, among others.

Said projects will be implemented in two months’ time following the execution of the trainings on March 26-27, tentatively.
