‘Bodies of 3 NPAs found in Isabela showed starvation was cause of death’ – 5th ID Philippine Army

Updated: Jul 12, 2022

Isabela, Philippines – Three bodies of rebels discovered in Isabela were allegedly starved to death, the 5th Infantry Division reported.

The remains of the rebels were exhumed by the authorities on July 3, 2022. The victims were identified as Alias Marco, Lucia, and Jero. All were members of the Komiteng Probinsya Isabela, Komiteng Rehiyon-Cagayan Valley.

Marco was said to have been ‘indecently’ buried on May 24, 2022 while Lucia and Jero were buried in June 2022 in Barangay Canadam, Maconacon, Isabela.

The Philippine Army described that the three were only buried just a foot below the ground and that they were all covered with a hammock. Former rebels said that the three died of starvation.

The bodies will be turned over to their respective families for proper burial once their loved ones have been traced and identified.

Brigadier General Danilo Benavides appealed to the remaining rebels to surrender now and not wait to fall victim to the same fate as Marco, Lucia, and Jero.

“Do not wait for the time to be reunited with your family lifeless. Lay down your arms and be with them again,” he stressed.

Major General Laurence Mina noted that communities are no longer supporting the CTGs which is why they experience a shortage in food supply. This, he said, is starving them to death.

Meantime, authorities are looking for more bodies of rebels who died but were not given a proper burial.
