Body of man who drowned saving his friend retrieved in Bokod

Bokod, Benguet – The lifeless body of the 21-year-old man who drowned after saving a friend Friday last week was recovered Monday, September 4, at Banao River in Ambuklao, Bokod.

A barangay official in the area said the victim’s cadaver was found by some residents and the victim’s family 800-900 meters away from where he drowned.

The victim’s remains are now up for proper disposition and shall soon be brought to their home in Tabangaoen, La Trinidad.

To recall, Jherby Halang, along with five other companions went for a picnic in said river last Friday.

Although warned not to swim since it is still prohibited due to the river’s swollen state, the group still insisted on swimming.

While swimming at around 11 AM on said date, the victim and his 15-year-old companion felt they were being dragged by the water current at the deep portion of the river.

Halang then pushed the girl for safety but unfortunately, he was not able to save himself from drowning after he was swept away by the strong river current.

Authorities, when called, immediately conducted a search and rescue operation, but failed to locate the victim for the first three days since the river water was still in its swollen state due to continuous rains.
