Bontoc, Mountain Province – Layad organization, a group of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Bontoc, is now ready to supply mobility aids and supplies, and offer repair services of devices for disabled individuals in the province.

The livelihood project, according to Sylvia Falag-ey, was chosen as there are no suppliers in the province of such materials and services.

Earlier this week, the organization received from the municipal government of Bontoc on Monday, July 19, 2021, supplies they procured through a livelihood grant from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) amounting to P480,660, which included 11 different types of wheelchairs, four types of walkers, 23 types of crutches, and 40 different kinds of equipment and tools.

According to the Bontoc Municipal Information Office, prior to the awarding, members of the association were provided with free skills and entrepreneurship training to run their repair business.

The group is one of the many others which applied and qualified for the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP), aimed at reducing poverty and vulnerability of the working poor as well as vulnerable and marginalized workers either through emergency employment or promotion of entrepreneurship and community enterprises.

Layad organization’s proposal

Layad organization proposed for Wheelchairs and Accessories Trading and Repair Services with the purpose of having a business to help themselves while providing overlooked services for disabled individuals. The project proposal was later processed by the LGU Bontoc’s Public Employment and Services Office (PESO).

With the implementation of the project, Bontoc Mayor Franklin Odsey in a message encouraged PWDs not to allow their disability to impede their path in reaching for their dreams.

He said that the sector should not be left out and just like other groups should be given equal opportunity.

“PWDs need more than what we can give them, thus the need to understand their needs and capabilities prompting government agencies to provide them the opportunity for work and make them more productive, self-reliant and empower them to become active,” the mayor said.
