“Boxes of carrots/potatoes with ‘A.B.C. Baguio’ markings not from Benguet, Baguio” – local traders

La Trinidad, Benguet – The League of Associations at the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Area clarified that the boxes of carrots and potatoes marked with A.B.C. BAGUIO being distributed among the key markets in the country are not from Benguet and Baguio City.

In an official statement released Tuesday last week, the league made it clear that Baguio does not produce carrots and potatoes.

The declaration was accompanied by pictures of several boxes arriving in Olongapo, Zambales, on November 10, 2023, bearing the aforementioned markings.

On November 24, pictures of other boxes bearing identical marks were also taken in Tondo, Manila.

“These boxes of carrots and potatoes are smuggled from China, and in fact, some of them were confiscated on November 10, 2023, in Olongapo, Zambales, by the Bureau of Customs operatives,” the league wrote.

The league went on to denounce the pervasive smuggling of vegetables and agricultural products, which it claimed was having a detrimental effect on the local agricultural sector and damaging the livelihoods of farmers and other stakeholders.

“We appeal to the national government and the concerned agencies to urgently act on this matter to save the vegetable industry,” they said.

To recall, the issue of alleged smuggled vegetables was also raised by the league in 2021 and 2022.
