Buguey, Cagayan targets Guinness longest “Malaga” grill record

Updated: Oct 17, 2022

Cagayan, Philippines – The municipal government of Buguey in Cagayan is aiming for the longest “Malaga” grill on the Guinness Book of World Records as they grilled almost 2,000 kilograms of “Malaga” (siganid or rabbit fish) at once this July 26, 2022.

The grilling of “malaga” fish held along Buguey beach in Barangay Centro reached 350 meters long.

The event, conducted in celebration of Malaga Festival, is yet the longest Malaga grilling in the Philippines.

In Region 2, only the Municipality of Buguey has high Malaga production.

In a statement, Mayor Licerio Antiporda said that the activity was held to showcase their successful Malaga-rearing as reflected in their town’s high production.

To increase harvest and ensure food security, Antiporda appealed to the provincial government for support.

The municipality likewise plans to procure larger freezers for storage that will enable the continuous supply of Malaga in the market.

Further, the town aspires to expand Malaga market not only in Cagayan province but in the country.
