Buguey's Agri-festival 2024 showcases over a hundred 'lechon baboy' delights

Updated: May 5

Buguey, Cagayan – Buguey is once again making waves in the food tourism sector as the municipality featured on Wednesday, April 24, over a hundred roasted pigs as it celebrates for the second time its Agri-festival.

The Agri-Festival serves as one of the most colorful celebrations of the said town, held April 24-25 every year, with the aim of promoting the significance of agriculture as well as expressing gratitude for their bountiful harvest.

Known for its crab festival, the coastal municipality takes pride in their abundant livestock and vegetables, thus showcasing mouth-watering dishes such as ‘Lechon’ and ‘Pinakbet’ at their agri-festival.

‘Lechon’ had its highlight on the event’s first day as the members of the Buguey Lechoneros Association paraded the roasted pigs, which they later shared with the locals and visitors, adding to the communal spirit of the event.

According to its local officials, the move to establish the ‘Lechon festival’ aimed at strengthening the pork industry in the municipality, as they have observed a decrease in the supply of pork meat over time.

Thus, in his message, Mayor Licerio Antiporda III encouraged every household to have at least two pigs taken care of, citing their importance not only for livelihood but also their contribution to food security.

“…Uray dua laeng a baboy, because it will augment the livelihood of Bugueyanos and at the same time ensure the food security of the people of Buguey,” he remarked.

In support of the pork industry, Antiporda relayed plans for the establishment of a pig breeding center in the municipality through P10 million in funds from the Department of Agriculture.
