Burglar in Cagayan kills 2 and stabs 1 before running away with cash and jewelry

Updated: Aug 15, 2022

Sta. Teresita, Cagayan – A burglar killed two children and stabbed an elderly before running away with stolen cash and jewelry on August 1, in Sta. Teresita, Cagayan, according to Cagayan police.

Police accounts said the elderly – a retired principal and a businesswoman - went to check the door and windows of her house but when she got back to her grandchildren’s room, she saw a man holding a knife.

The elderly tried to struggle against the burglar but she was stabbed multiple times and was tied using a chord and a piece of cloth.

She then pleaded to the suspect not to hurt her 6-year-old and 5-year-old grandkids but the suspect stabbed the two to death.

The suspect fled the scene after. Police identified the alleged killer as Jerry Maba Genova from Calayan town but residing in the same barangay.

PSSg Ulysses R. Saliganan, the case investigator, narrated through Cagayan PIO that the victims’ neighbor was the one who reported the incident to the police.

Sta. Teresita police immediately responded and ferried the senior citizen to a health facility in Aparri, where she is currently being treated.

A hot pursuit operation was conducted after the elderly confirmed the identity of the suspect resulting in his arrest.

Police said Genova resisted arrest and fought against the authorities but was shot. Genova was later taken to a hospital for treatment.

The victim’s pieces of jewelry, meantime, were retrieved from the suspect.

Genova will be facing Robbery with Homicide in relation to RA 7610, Frustrated Murder, Direct Assault, Resistance and Disobedience upon Person in Authority or Agent of Person in Authority.
