Cagayan and Isabela farmers feed pineapples to animals due to lack of buyers

Cagayan, Philippines – Due to lack of buyers, farmers in Cagayan and Isabela were left with no choice but to feed their pineapple harvests to their farm animals.

This glut of pineapple is reportedly being experienced in Echague, Isabela and in Sta. Ana, Cagayan.

Farmers’ group Rural Rising Philippines wrote that the produce is now being given to horses, carabaos, and pigs as there are no buyers of their crops.

“There are no buyers, there will be no income from this harvest. What a painful irony — the animals feast while their owners go hungry. We’re talking tons of Pineapples, not just a few kilos,” they informed on Facebook.

They further described that even the farm animals cannot consume all pineapples and the rest are left rotting.

The group, in their desire to help Northern Luzon farmers, initiated a ‘Pineapple Rescue Buy’ which can be accessed through http://bit.ly/PineapplesGB-RRPH . Through the site, you’ll get 7 kilos for only P249.

“We must get involved in helping the farmers directly in the face of over production and maldistribution,” the group said.

Meantime, the Department of Agriculture in Region 2 assured support to the affected farmers in Isabela and Cagayan.

So far, the agency helped three farmers cooperatives sell more than 22,000 kilos of pineapples.
