Cagayan, Philippines –Cagayan is now on Dengue alert after more than 700 individuals got infected with the mosquito-borne viral disease.

Cagayan Provincial Information Office reported on May 23 that Dr. Carlos Cortina III, Provincial Health Officer informed of 730 cases and 4 deaths recorded in their latest data.

Of the 730, Tuguegarao has the highest number with 142 cases followed by Lasam with 68 and Piat with 48. The 4 confirmed fatalities are from Baggao, Gattaran, Lasam, and Solana.

It was also disclosed that while people ages 1-10 years old were the ones who got infected with the viral disease for the past 5 years, most of the 730 cases documented recently are 11-20 years old.

With the number of dengue cases at District Hospitals, Cortina conveyed that walking blood donors at the barangay will greatly help patients, as blood in the blood bank could easily get depleted.

The Provincial Health Office reminds the public to regularly clean their surroundings in order for mosquitos to have a place to breed.

Dengue cases mostly occur during the rainy season in the Philippines. According to the World Health Organization Dengue Situation Update, there have been a total of 16,156 dengue cases reported in the Philippines from January 1 to March 2022.

The figure is said to be 31% lower compared to the 23,489 documented in the same period last year.
