Cagayan records 871 sore eyes cases

Cagayan, Philippines – Cases of conjunctivitis or sore eyes in the Province of Cagayan are monitored to be increasing with now nearly a thousand individuals getting infected with the disease.

The Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit(PESU) accounted for 871 cases as of Sept. 19, 2023, the Cagayan Provincial Information Office reported.

PESU noted that the figure could still increase since they are still consolidating reports from the different health centers.

Of the current number, Tuguegarao City has the highest cases of the highly contagious disease with 508, followed by Calayan with 82, and Aparri with 43.

Alcala and Ballesteros have the least so far with 3 cases each.

Nestor Santiago of PESU further disclosed that most of the infected individuals in the province are children.

It was likewise revealed that behind the high number of cases is the changing weather in the province, transmission inside the school and among family members, weak immune system, and not consulting a health professional who could provide immediate medical intervention on infected people.

The Cagayan Provincial Health Office urged the public to proceed to the nearest health center should they experience symptoms like redness, itchiness, slight pain, watering of the eyes, and a feeling like you have sand in your eye.
