Cagayan, Philippines – “Sayang ‘pag nasira.”

As super typhoon “Mawar” nears the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), farmers in Cagayan Valley were left with no choice but to harvest their crops even when such still need some time to mature.

The move was also recommended by the Office of the Provincial Agriculture.

“Mawar”, according to the state weather bureau’s forecast, 1,705 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon, moving west at the speed of 20 kilometer per hour. It continues to move on a west-northwest pattern and is expected to enter PAR between Friday night and Saturday morning. By then, it would be designated the local name “Betty.”

Though it may not make landfall, the typhoon may bring heavy rains which may trigger flooding or rain-induced landslides over Northern Luzon beginning late Sunday or Monday.

In Cagayan, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) identified 10 areas of concern - Sta. Ana, Aparri, Gonzaga, Sta. Teresita, Buguey, Ballesteros, Abulug, Pamplona, Sanchez Mira, and Claveria.

Some farmers in these areas, including those in Isabela were forced to harvest early amid the threat of “Mawar.”

Meanwhile, local officials issued advisories on class suspension among schools for the security of students and teachers.

Authorities further prepositioned food packs and necessary supplies to various towns.

The public is cautioned to secure properties and remain safe and alert.
