Calanan, Tabuk marks 73rd founding anniversary

Updated: May 17, 2023

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Local culture and talents were highlighted during the 73rd founding anniversary of Barangay Calanan on May 1 to 2, 2023.

Established in 1950, Calanan got its name from the Filipino word “kalan”, a traditional stove designed for cooking food. Just like stove with three stones used to support and balance the pot, the place is the melting pot of those from Dagupan, Pinukpuk, Lubuagan, including other places due to the three intersecting roads. The ancestors first called the place “Kalanan” but with Spanish colonization, the letter K was changed to C, thus the current name “Calanan.”

With only two years ahead of celebrating their diamond founding anniversary, the people of Calanan headed by Punong Barangay Christito Lumbican gathered to reflect on the challenges they have surpassed over the years. The community was reminded of their role in winning more battles for a more progressive village.

Representing their own puroks in the “Pattong” contest, gong players with their female dancers beat their gongs and danced to win the prize. The Kalinga dance of Purok 2 was later declared the winner.

In the singing competition, Lea B. Domingo of Purok 4 won in the kids' category, while Daryl Gamatero of Purok 5 triumphed in the adult category.

Miss Calanan 2023

Outshining other candidates, Racel Jane Manalad of Purok 6A was crowned as Miss Calanan 2023, succeeding Miss Calanan 2011 Liven Faith Lozano. The now reigning queen was likewise named Miss Wit, Best in Talent, Best in Evening Gown, Best in Environmental Attire, and Miss Hope.

Settling as first runner-up was KC Alcanzarin of Purok 6B, while Geneva Kadchao of Purok 5 finished the campaign as second runner-up.

The search was graced by Dr. Caroline Agyao, the Municipal Health Officer of Lubuagan.

On the second day of the village fiesta, the officials along with the community participated in the parade which was followed by a thanksgiving mass and the blessing and turnover of the senior citizen building as well as the gymnasium and the vehicles.

This year’s festivity centered on the theme, “Urnus ken Kapya, Tarigagay ti Tunggal Maysa; Itultuloy Tayo Kuma.”
