Tabuk City, Kalinga – Magnitude 6.7 and 7.2 earthquakes may strike the province if the Kalinga and Bangui Faults move. This is according to the Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

It was said that magnitude 6.1 – 6.9 can cause damage to poorly constructed buildings and other structures, while 7.0 – 7.9 is described to be a ‘major’ earthquake that poses considerable damage.

In worst-case scenarios, Cordillera RDRRMC laid out that Kalinga may experience these major jolts.

If the Kalinga fault moves, there is a possibility of a 6.7 magnitude earthquake that may cause intensity VIII or a very destructive jolt in Kalinga, the Southwestern part of Cagayan, and some areas in Apayao.

Likewise, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake with intensity VIII could strike Eastern Kalinga, Western Cagayan, and major parts of Apayao if the Bangui Fault in Apayao moves.

Additionally, if a magnitude 8.0 or a ‘great earthquake’ hit the Cagayan Province, intensity VIII can be felt across Cagayan, Apayao, and Kalinga.

Other earthquakes

It was also stated that intensity VIII jolt can be experienced in the Provinces of Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, and Nueva Vizcaya if a magnitude 7.1 hit Mountain Province.

Meantime, if the Tubao Fault moves, there’s a possibility of a 7.2 earthquake and intensity VIII may shake La Union, Benguet, and Pangasinan.

Don’t panic

Office of Civil Defense – Cordillera Planning Officer Ferdinand Tamulto, through Philippine Information Agency Cordillera, however, reminds the public not to panic, stating that no one can predict when an earthquake occurs and where its epicenter be.

He added that there is, however, a need to be vigilant and to prepare every day.

OCD-CAR Director and CRDRRMC Chairperson Albert Mogol also stressed that the local government units should as well implement early and yearly assessments of structures.
