CBCP official says Magalong set a good example

Tabuk City, Kalinga – An official of the Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, January 30,2021 said Mayor Benjamin Magalong has set a good example after resigning as a contact tracing czar following breach of health protocols during the controversial party the mayor attended together with his wife on January 27.

Magalong tendered his resignation on January 28 but was rejected by President Rodrigo Duterte.

During an interview of TeleRadyo with Rev. Fr. Jerome Secillano, executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), he said the action of the mayor was good as he took accountability of what happened.

“At least maganda 'yung ginawa niya, he took accountability for something that was done. Nakita ng taumbayan na mukha 'yang mali, mukha 'yang may paglabag sa health protocols, at least he owned up to it,” he said when asked by radio anchor Julius Babao regarding the issue.

“Siguro nakita natin dito hindi lahat ng lider ganun. 'Yung iba talaga kumakapit sa posisyon. Sana nga makikita natin ang mga pinuno natin nagbibigay ng huwaran din sa taumbayan,” he added.

Secillano said entitlement should not be practiced by public servants saying, “ Kasi halimbawa ang namamayani dito yung entitlement, naku, hindi talaga public service ang ibibigay mo kung ‘di self-interest ang mamamayani dito.”

In the letter penned by Magalong, he said he should have done an immediate spot correction of the errors he witnessed that time as he was a senior officer of the Task Force on Covid-19, adding that the incident served as a reminder that a higher standard is always expected of him.

“It pains me to see my family, and my constituents, in anguish over this but I am committed to hold myself accountable and do what is necessary to rectify this misstep,” Magalong further said.

Magalong wrote he is ready and willing to cooperate if the Task Force or the Department of Interior and Local Government will launch an investigation over his actions.

33 individuals who attended the party including the mayor’s wife paid their penalties for violating health protocols during the party.
