Isabela, Philippines – A village chieftain in Isabela may soon be charged after accidentally shooting a 34-year-old woman at a wedding reception in Buyasan, San Mariano, Isabela over the weekend.

The shooting stemmed from a heated argument between Buyasan Punong Barangay Danilo Caronan, 47, and Manuel Sales when the latter complained after the song he requested (sonata) was covered by others, San Mariano Police Station said through XFM Santiago.

Caronan reprimanded Sales which angered the latter.

When the village chieftain and his wife were about to go home using their motorcycle, Sales who was then holding a bottle of liquor suddenly approached the two, prompting Caronan to draw his gun from his sling bag.

The Punong Barangay alleged that the people surrounding him at the time pushed his hand thus, pulling the trigger of the firearm and hitting the left leg and then the right leg of Jesusa Bacani, a resident of the same place.

Bacani was rushed to San Mariano Community Hospital for medication, while Caronan voluntarily surrendered to the police station, bringing with him his Cal. 45 pistol.

The chieftain and the victim, accordingly, decided to settle an arrangement, providing Caronan will pay the hospital bills and other needs of Bacani.

However, the local police said the Punong Barangay may face charges for illegal possession of a firearm, in case his firearm turns out to be unregistered or unlicensed.

As of writing, the police are still waiting for the result or certification from the Firearms and Explosive Division (FED).
