Christmas in Cordillera 'generally peaceful'

Updated: Dec 28, 2023

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Although there were recorded crimes from December 16 to 25, the Philippine National Police - Cordillera said the Christmas celebration and the observance of the ‘Misa de Gallo’ in the region have been generally peaceful.

In a press release on Wednesday, December 27, police said there were no major untoward incidents that happened within the region’s six provinces and in Baguio City.

However, 25 crimes transpired - 10 index crimes, and 15 non-index crimes.

When compared to the same period last year, the crime rate in the region this year dropped by 56 percent.

PNP Cordillera said the heightened security implemented was one of the contributing factors to why the crimes went down this year.

To recall, 1,199 PNP personnel in the region have been tasked with ensuring safety and security during the Christmas celebration by increasing police visibility and conducting patrols within their respective jurisdictions.

For the rest of the holiday season, the PNP said they are still on full-alert status to ensure that it will still be a safe and joyous celebration.

Meanwhile, in light of the impending New Year's celebration, authorities are expected to maintain vigilance in enforcing "Iwas Paputok" to lower the number of firecracker-related accidents.

Gun owners are likewise urged to use their weapons responsibly and refrain from shooting indiscriminately as we welcome another year.
