City Council pushes to name Barangay Bantay as Tabuk’s ‘Fruit Basket Capital’

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The City Council of Tabuk during the Regular Session on Thursday, September 16, 2021, moved for the creation of an ordinance declaring Barangay Bantay as “Fruit Basket Capital” of the city to make the title official and with a legal basis.

This following the request of the Barangay Council of Bantay through Resolution No. 68, series of 2021 for the council to craft an ordinance for said declaration, which gained a positive response from the city council considering that ‘it is high time for Bantay to be officially recognized given that is already known for the said title for the past years.’

Accordingly, the barangay was named as such by the locals since it is producing most of the fruit products in the city to include rambutan, lanzones, durian, and dragon fruits, and that it only needs an official declaration to name the barangay as such.

The Committee on Agriculture chaired by SP member Atty. Dick Bal-o was tasked to prepare an ordinance regarding the matter which shall be tackled on the council’s succeeding sessions.

Barangay Bantay is known for its farms producing fruit-bearing trees, where owners are letting buyers harvest on their own through the ‘pick and buy’ activity. The barangay is likewise celebrating its “Fruits Festival” annually, and it's now in its fourth year, giving an opportunity for farmers to showcase and sell their abundant harvest.

During the harvest season, these farms are attracting not just the locals but also visitors from neighboring provinces such as Isabela and Cagayan.

In connection to this, City Vice-Mayor Bernard Glenn Dao-as is now encouraging Tabukeños to also involve themselves in planting fruit-bearing trees in their neighborhood as this will benefit them in the succeeding years, particularly when those trees are already bearing fruits that are ready for harvest.
