Quezon City, Philippines – Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in a press statement this November 06, 2020 that gradual cooling of the surface air temperature over the North-Eastern part of Luzon has been observed indicating the beginning of the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan season in the country.

“For the past several days, strong to gale-force northeasterly winds have prevailed over Northern Luzon due to the strengthening of the high pressure system over Siberia and enhanced by passing tropical cyclones. These meteorological conditions indicate the onset of Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) season,” stated PAGASA Administrator Dr. Vicente Malano.

Northeast windflow is expected to gradually become more dominant over Northern Luzon which will bring cold and dry air, according to PAGASA. Surges of cold temperatures may be expected in the coming months, PAGASA warned.

The Amihan season in the Philippines is a weather system that comes after Habagat season; it is characterized by moderate temperatures, little to no rainfall in the central and western part of Luzon and Visayas and a prevailing wind from the east. Its weather pattern usually begins in the month of November or December. It sometimes ends after 5 to 6 months.

Meanwhile, the state weather bureau also advised all concerned government agencies and the public to take precautionary measures to mitigate the potential impacts of these events as with the on-going La Niña.

The Amihan Season may be enhanced and trigger floods, flash floods, and rain-induced landslides over susceptible areas.

Habagat is a season characterized by hot and humid weather, frequent heavy rainfall, and a prevailing wind from the western parts. The Habagat officially ended in the last week of October as announced by PAGASA last month.
