Updated: Nov 22, 2022

Apayao, Philippines – Twenty-two farmers from Nabuangan, Conner, Apayao are putting their effort and time to produce better quality of sugarcane wine with the use of hydrometer and refractometer technology following a two-day training provided by the DTI-Apayao through Negosyo Center Conner.

Conner, Apayao is one place in the region which produces some of the known sugarcane wine.

The training introduced farmers the use of equipment and technology as means to upgrade their sugarcane wine processing.

Provincial Director of DTI-Apayao, Wenna Buston said production of standard quality wine can be expected, adding that the farmers may be more confident to market their wine outside the province.

“Ang training na yan kinunduct namin dahil yung kanilang ginagawa na sugarcane wine ay hindi siya standard, kung minsan matamis, kung minsan mapait, so nakita ng DTI yun at kung puwede silang matulungan kung paano ma-standardized ang kanilang production through using equipment or technology,” Wenna Buston, Provincial Director of DTI-Apayao.

One of the resource speakers, Aries Boy Enriquez, owner of Mawawagi Wine from Malama, Conner, Apayao demonstrated the proper use of the said apparatus and the proper processing procedure of sugarcane wine to encourage fellow to adopt the technology and use them properly.

The hydrometer is an equipment used to measure the density of sugarcane wine, while refractometer is used to test the sugar level of wine.

Meantime, DTI-CAR said they will give full support to sugarcane farmers and MSMEs in the region to continue to develop their enterprises.

“We have 21, 000 na MSMEs registered in Cordillera, but in our experience going around the province that could go up to 30 thousand, malaki din siya, that’s why we are promoting this sugarcane industry because not everybody could land a job but everybody could land a business and be employed in a business,” Juliet Lucas, Regional Director of DTI-CAR said.
