Tabuk City, Kalinga - Unlike in other areas in Kalinga, which will have teachers to serve during the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, Mabongtot in Lubuagan will be served by police personnel.

This was confirmed by Commission on Elections (COMELEC) - Cordillera Regional Director Attorney Julius Torres on Thursday, Oct. 05, 2023.

Policemen were tapped to render their service for the 2023 BSK election at Mabongtot Elementary School following the refusal of teachers in the area to serve as election officers.

Nine cops will be members of the electoral board while two others are tasked to serve as supervisors and support staff. They are already undergoing training at present.

In an interview with a teacher from said area, she said their refusal to serve during the election was decided since most of them were close relatives of aspiring barangay officials.

"Kaaduwan kanyami relatives mi dagidiay agtataray. Nairana nga as in asideg kami kadagidiay agtataray sir, nu diay case mi diay mismo barangay mi sir. Nag-apply kami ngem di basaen mi memo ket bawal dagiti adda relatives na," she said.

Aside from Mabongtot, Lubuagan, 10 voting precincts in Bangued and Pilar, Abra also requested for police officers to serve during the election. Torres said the request was made due to safety concerns.

The election period for the October 30 village and youth polls will run until November 29 while the campaign period is slated for October 19 to 28, 2023.
