Cordillera animal lab raises alarm against active rabies cases

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Pet lovers in the region are once again reminded to have their fur babies vaccinated against rabies and ensure their pets have updated shots.

This advisory came after the Department of Agriculture Cordillera - Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RADDL) detected four rabies cases in the region this January.

Rabies is 100% fatal and it is passed on to human beings through an infected animal’s bite or scratch. The World Health Organization stated 99% of cases are transmitted to people by domestic dogs.

About 200 to 300 Filipinos die every year due to rabies.

In a press release this January 24, the Department of Agriculture informed that the RADDL received eight samples for testing. Of these, four animals have turned out positive for rabies.

Three of these positive samples came from Mountain Province, 2 from Bontoc, and 1 from Sabangan. The other one came from Lagangilang, Abra.

Dr. Ofelia Ducayag, RADDL Chief, noted that the spread of rabies can only be controlled through responsible pet ownership which includes regular vaccination of pets.

In 2022, 26 rabies cases were recorded in the Cordillera Administrative Region. These were monitored in Abra and Mt. Province.
