Baguio City, Philippines – Police personnel in Cordillera are closely monitoring two potential private armed groups (PAGs) that may pose threats to the October 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections.

Under watch are Abarracoso Group in Abra and Bawas-Bal-iwang Group Kalinga, as of Sept. 22, 2023.

Potential PAGs or private armies are organized group of two or more persons with legally issued or illegally possessed firearms that could be utilized to sow fear and intimidation for the advancement of and protection of vested political or economic interest of a particular politician or people.

As the election nears, these are more likely to become active as they may be used by candidates to advance their own interest.

The public are encouraged to aid the police force by reporting suspicious individuals in their areas so they may assess if there is a need to augment the security efforts.

Over 8,000 personnel of Police Regional Office – Cordillera and 853 personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines will be deployed for the 2023 BSKE slated for October 30.
