Cordillera has highest suicide cases in PH

Baguio City, Philippines – Suicide cases in Cordillera have risen in the last five years, disclosed the health department in the region.

The 123 cases recorded in 2018 to 2019 surged to 713 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 up to last year, bringing the total to 836.

The figure is the highest case in the country, according to Department of Health.

In said period, 478 of those who suffered from severe bouts of depression and other mental health issues ended their lives, 345 of which happened during the peak of the pandemic.

In the region, Benguet province has the highest suicide cases, followed by Mt. Province.

To combat stigma around mental health in Benguet, Regional Director of DOH – Cordillera, Rio Magpantay pledged P500,000 for proper interventions.

To recall, Magpantay initiated Reaching Individuals for Self-Empowerment through United Partnerships (RISE UP) project to raise mental health awareness among stakeholders.

He believes that with unity among the community members, local government units, national line agencies and private sectors, necessary support and help will be provided to those facing the “silent epidemic” thus, reducing the alarming suicide rate.
