Baguio City, Philippines – A total of P916 million was allocated by the health department for the upgrade of health facilities and services across the Cordillera region this 2023.

The fund will be utilized for the health facility enhancement projects, as part of the preparation for the full implementation of Universal Health Care which guarantees equitable access to quality and affordable healthcare goods and services.

In a statement, the Regional Director of the Department of Health – Cordillera, Dr. Rio Magpantay, said the amount will be used for the 247 projects aimed at improving the primary care facilities at the different villages in the municipalities of the region.

Rural health units, he said, must have sufficient supplies and adequate service providers and personnel to attend to patients.

Part of the plan is for all local government units to adopt and establish an epidemiology surveillance unit in their health offices to monitor the onset of the disease, thus preventing its outbreak.

The health department likewise included in its plan the improvement of the health literacy of the people, especially those in far-flung communities, and the readiness of LGUs to institutionalize the services and funds to maintain the services of the primary care facilities.

Training of health workers and employment of additional personnel were also added to the list of priorities.

Magpantay underscored that the upgrade of health facilities in the villages is a must, especially since these are where the community seeks medical intervention.

This, he added, will ensure the readiness of the facilities and the health personnel for the UHC which expects full implementation in 2025.
