Baguio City, Philippines - The Cordillera region emerged as the second fastest developing region in the Philippines in 2022, according to Kalinga Governor James Edduba.

Edduba, the Regional Development Council(RDC) Chair of the Economic Development Sector, announced this during the RDC 3rd Quarter Full Meeting today, Sept. 14, 2023, at Hotel Elizabeth in Baguio City.

According to him, Cordillera observed an 8.7 percent economic growth rate last year. The region came next to Western Visayas which had a 9.3 percent rate.

Edduba further reported that Cordillera exceeded its 4.4 percent growth rate in pre-pandemic time.

The data also showed that much of the growth is due to the rebound of the services sector, particularly the tourism industry.

In fact, the Department of Tourism - Cordillera reported that there are 1.27 million documented tourist arrivals in the region in 2022 which is higher compared to the 418,000 in 2021.

As for the industrial sector, manufacturing and construction were also monitored to have a positive growth rate of 7 percent.

Meanwhile, despite ranking second in economic growth, the agricultural sector in the region was observed to have a 2.2 percent negative growth in 2022. This is due to the impact of typhoons during the harvest season of rice.

Likewise, the African Swine Fever ( ASF) severely affected the region’s livelihood production, of which, thousands of hogs died from the virus.
