Cordillera leaders reiterate push for Autonomy during 35th founding anniversary

Mt. Province, Philippines – With the Cordillera Administrative Region celebrating its month-long 35th founding anniversary, Cordilleran leaders reiterate efforts for the realization of an autonomous region to accelerate the economic, social growth, and development in the new normal.

Gracing the kickoff program in Sagada, Mountain Province held Friday, July 1, Prosecutor Zenaida Niwane, representing Joseline P. Niwane of the Office of the Undersecretary for Standards and Capacity Building Group of the Department of Social Welfare and Development highlighted the importance of the establishment of an autonomous region.

Autonomy in Cordillera, she underscored, would allow the region to manage its own wealth.

Also, the region would get its fair share of the national wealth and will have its own revenue sources.

Moreover, the measure would grant the regional government to craft and implement its projects and programs in accordance with the priorities of each province in the region.

“Ultimately, the region can become self-reliant and independent from the national government. Not pushing through would be tantamount to admitting that Cordillerans are incapable of governing themselves,” said Niwane.

Meanwhile, Senators Robin Padilla and Loren Legarda conveyed their support for the autonomy of Cordillera through their messages during the said event.

The House Bill 5687, seeking the establishment of Cordillera Autonomous Region, was filed by all representatives in the region, including Congressman Allen Jesse Mangaoang.

After its approval on its third and final reading by the House of Representatives on May 30, 2022, the measure was transmitted to the Senate, where it awaits review and further approval.
